World War I Nancy Farrell Chamberlain College of Nursing World War I On June 28, 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was killed by a man named Gavrilo Princip. He was a nationalist that wanted Austria-Hungry out of Bosnia. This action was the spark that started World War I, also known as The Great War. (wales online.co.uk). Britain, France, Russia, Italy and the United States were the Allies. Germany, Austria-Hungry, Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria were the Central Powers. (Keene, 2012). There were other factors that contributed to the war. Imperialism, nationalism and militarism and the alliances were a big part of the war. Contributing Factors of WWI Imperialism, nationalism, militarism and the alliance system were all contributing factors to the war. (thoughtco.com) The European nations all wanted to be the highest powers. There was a strong sense of nationalism. Nationalism is when there is an extreme form of patriotism and loyalty to your country. (Thoughtco.com) They believe their country is the best. Germany was a country that thought they were the best when it came to their military and industrialism. (History.net). They thought they could win any war against any nation. Russia believed their country was protected by God. (Thoughtco.com). They believed their massive population gave them an upper hand and it made them the best.
