The two themes that we found throughout all three revolutions were political grievances and social injustice. Political grievances basically means that the leaders of the people prior to the revolution were unsatisfactory. For example, King Louis XIV was the leader of France before the French Revolution. Under his rule, his people experienced shortages in bread and an unfair taxing system. They deemed the king unsatisfactory because of the way they were being treated, they got rid of the king, taking his power and later having him guillotined. The final example is the Haitian Revolution. Slaves in France revolted in an uprising against the French Colonial Government. Slaves were being treated badly by their owners, so they revolted and gained their freedom through war. In each of these situations, there are two themes present. The people are unhappy with their lives and how their leader treats them, and the leader is unsatisfactory in the leadership of his/her country. Therefore, the people rise up against their leader and gain freedom through war. For our cake we represent three different revolutions, the Haitian, the French, and the American revolutions. The Haitian revolution is represented on the bottom layer of the cake. For the evidence we used little figures that represented slaves. This connects back to the revolution because slaves were an important part of the Haitian revolution. The slaves that worked on the plantations and were upset by the harsh conditions.
