Criminal law deals with crimes ranging from a minor misdemeanor to felonies. These crimes can range from something as little as a disorderly conduct to something as violent and severe as murder. Criminal law involves police officers, prosecutors, judges, juries and the courts. The primary goal of the criminal law is to help protect the communities from criminal activity and keep people safe. A defendant charged with a crime would go to court and make a plea of guilty, not guilty, or no contest. A plea of guilty or no contest would end the case and the defendant would then be sentenced.
