Electronic couponing has given the customer a new experience of money management. Consumers have now eliminated the time consuming factor of searching through the paper to find deals and then having to cut each coupon out. Technology has helped expand marketing for companies and make it more convenient for consumers to access what they need. Electronic couponing has given customers a sense of immediacy and there is no doubt that they are taking advantage of it. Applications have also been designed to increase the sense of mobility by geofencing. Geofencing allows the application to locate the customer, predict the products they intend to buy, and keep a database of the consumer’s preferences. By focusing on their customer’s unique shopping choices, companies give a sense of personalization through their products. With this sense of immediacy, customers will feel more of an impulse to use the service provided. This paper will provide information about couponing, and a general history of the use of coupons. It will also give a deeper understanding of the pros and cons of electronic couponing, how it’s being used more these days, and as how it ultimately effects impulse buying. Well, studies show that in this age careful spending in 9-in-10 Americans have made an impulse purchase when they were out shopping in a store based on a sale or a special that was going on where they were (Berk, 2009). Electronic coupons have the quick immediacy that can have the coupon in the consumers’ hands. This coupon can either trigger the customer to buy a product that they never used before, simply because of the coupon that impulses the buyer to buy that product. Also, a coupon itself can force the consumer to buy more products then needed because of a “buy 2, get one free”
