The capital punishment, often referred to as the death penalty, has been around since Eighteenth Century B.C. and has caused a debate for a long time about how people thought of it as an inhumane way to treat people. Although it may seem like an inhumane way to treat people it can still be considered an effective way to deter violent criminals, help victims families find closure, and to help support the constitution. Today, many criminals are getting away with very little to no punishment for the crimes they committed. One of these criminals could be walking down the street in your neighborhood hunting for their next victim and you would say it wasn’t a big deal because it doesn’t concern you. According to the CBS news’s study on the death penalty they proved that the death penalty actually does deter future criminals. “What gets little notice, however, is a series of academic studies over the half-dozen year that claim to settle a once hotly debated argument- whether the death penalty acts as a deterrent to murder. The analyses say yes. They count between three and 18 lives that would be saved by the execution of each convicted killer” (CBS news). In a larger sense, what they’re trying to say is that the capital punishment is the ultimate warning against all crimes. If criminals know that the justice system will not stop at putting them to death, then the system appears more draconian to them.
