The mid-seventies and the eighties stood under the sign of human rights. Stemming from the CSCE negotiations in the early seventies, as part of the general détente process, the Final Act , signed on August 1, 1975, made the respect of human rights one of the ten principles guiding the relations between the 35 participating states .
Moreover, Chapter III of the Final Act, titled “Co-operation in Humanitarian and Other Fields”, was a clear sign that human rights was to become a constant issue on international agenda.
Soon after the conclusion of the Final Act, Basket III proved to be a Pandora’s box for communist states as it contributed to the unleashing of dissent energies and the establishment in Communist countries of Helsinki committees requesting the observance of human rights. …show more content…
