The residential school system was a system of boarding schools that were established by the Canadian government and administered by various churches to assimilate Indigenous children into Euro-Canadian culture. Many of these children suffered physical, sexual, and emotional abuse from school staff. Even though residential schools have been abolished they can still affect indigenous people today. The book “Indian Horse” clearly represents the intergenerational trauma of Indigenous communities in Canada.

Sarah Oide Esther Burnett Horne: Strategies for Resisting Colonial Thought in Wahpeton Indian School Throughout the course so far, I have been most interested in our class discussions of how federal schools served as sites of collective resistance for Indigenous students, teachers, and staff. Although I broadly knew about the history of federal boarding schools and their goals of assimilation for Indigenous children before taking this course, I had never considered how individual teachers and school employees resisted these colonial ideals within schools to preserve a sense of cultural identity for their students. The white men had treated the natives poorly, continued in viewing them as savages and trying to civilize the Native Americans through uncomfortable ways. Native Americans were forced to assimilate into Western culture and have to withstand the racism and discrimination from the Whites during that time. One of the methods that the Whites used to try to have the Indians fit into the Western culture were Native American boarding schools. These schools were established during the late 19th century to educate the Native American children according to Euro-American standards. The boarding schools often established rules for the Native Americans to follow, but most of the Native Americans were not willing to abandon their culture and tribal traditions.
The net effect of the whites teaching policy was the Indian culture was bad. Furthermore, the boarding schools basic only went up to eighth grade. The consequence of only teaching vocational skills, and limiting education was that the Indians “cannot compete with a college bred race”(#8). The by-product of of these teaching methods was no self worth, loss of culture, and significant resentment toward whites. What the boarding schools taught make it almost impossible for the Indians to go back to their old way of life, and it also did not give them enough skills to move forwards.
The goals of the Indian Boarding schools are to assimilate Native American tribes to the American way of living (AIRC 1). In order to delay the learning of their native language. In school, students are prohibited to speak their language. Religious teaching is also a goal of the boarding schools. The students are taught the standards of Christianity.
Indian Boarding schools were created in the 1800s to “Kill the Indian, Save the Man.” They achieved this by transforming the natives looks, culture, language, and teaching them a certain way so they would be able to function in a “european society”. Indian boarding schools taught students both academic and “real world” skills, but they did so while ripping the indians from their culture. Most indian boarding schools were the same with their tactics in transforming the native man into a white one.
The government believed that if the children remained with their parents the problems would only increase, with the boarding schools it would make it easier to cut off their culture and religions. They decided it was best to christianize the children making almost every boarding schools either christian or catholic. Imagine being ripped apart from family members, culture, tradition, and labelled a savage that needs to be educated. Imagine constantly facing punishment at school for being one’s self. Unfortunately, these events were faced head on for many First Nations people living in Canada in the late 20th century. These First Nations people were the victims of an extensive school system set up by the government to eradicate Aboriginal culture across Canada and to assimilate them into what was considered a mainstream society.
