Sojourner Truth was a prominent abolitionist and women’s rights activist. Born a slave in New York State, she had at least three of her children sold away from her. After escaping slavery, Truth embraced evangelical religion and became involved in moral reform and abolitionist work. She collected supplies for black regiments during the Civil War and immersed herself in advocating for freed people during the Reconstruction period. Isabella escaped slavery in 1827, one year before mandatory emancipation in New York State, by fleeing to a Quaker family, the Van Wageners, whose name she took.
He spoke impromptly in many places, but his most famous speech that helped to kick start his role in the anti-slavery movement, was in Nantucket where he told the story of his life as a slave. This speech was so moving that one of the attendees, Lloyd Garrison, asked him to become a public speaker for the American Anti-Slavery Society. Shortly after he joined the American Anti-Slavery Society, Douglass published his first autobiography entitled, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. During this time, he was also writing for many different newspapers, such as North Star, Fredrick Douglass’ Paper, and Douglass’ Monthly. Frederick Douglass was an African American who escaped slavery and later on worked as an abolitionist. He was born into slavery, but had been fortunate enough to learn how to read and write from his owner’s wife and poor boys that he met on the streets. Through this knowledge, he began to advocate against slavery and equality for all. His first contribution began through several public speeches and his autobiography called The Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass, An American Slave. His book explained the experiences he went through as a slave, and how he escaped slavery.

Martin Luther King Jr. and Frederick Douglass were a couple of the many mistreated African Americans in ways of different injustices. These two men worked in different ways for the same cause; becoming a free man with equal rights. Social and Racial injustices limit the successfulness a person can have in life, however with perseverance, one can push through the barriers that are placed before them. Introduction Many writers and speakers have been influenced by the speeches of Martin Luther King Jr. "I have a Dream" and Frederick Douglass "What to the Slave is the Fourth of July". These speeches have helped evolve the history so drastically that black American’s now have freedom and to never be segregated like they were in the past.
Although a century apart, Martin Luther King Jr’s Letter from Birmingham Jail and Frederick Douglass’s What to a Slave is the fourth of July are kindred spirits. Notwithstanding the many differences in their respective writing styles, deep down the essence of the message conveyed is still very much the same. Both Martin Luther King Junior and Frederick Douglas had similar beliefs and concepts related to the treatment of the African American community. African-American slaves were forbidden to obtain the knowledge of being able to read or write, stemming from the fear of white masters that educated slaves will overpower them. Douglass managed to learn to read by bribing poor and hungry white boys into teaching him in exchange for bits of bread. Truth had been married twice and bore one child with her first husband and three with her second. Her first marriage was not permitted by her owner and the couple was forced to never see each other again. Sojourner was forced to marry her second husband by her abusive owner.
