Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth were both activists, they both grew up as slaves and escaped, which led them both to become known activists that we learn about today. Frederick Douglass was a house slave and was taught to read at the age of 12. When reading about slavery, he realized that it was wrong, he tried to escape. He became an activist and made his first speech in 1852 at the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society’s annual convention in Nantucket.
