Yesterday, Oct. 4, 1957, the Sputnik 1 was launched into orbit by the Soviet Union. Now, how did we get to this point?
According to nasa.gov, in 1AD, people in ancient china people would fill bamboo with a crude form of gunpowder. It was then tossed into fires at festivals, and went off with a bang. This was the very beginning of what is now called rocketry.
After this, in 1232, china was in war against the mongols.The chinese soldiers attached arrows to these bamboo tubes used at festivals and lit one end so that the arrow would fly into the opposition, and not blow up in the chinese soldiers faces. After seeing china 's newest technology, the mongols developed their own crude rockets and eventually spread the technology into europe.

As the step rocket burned out and fell off in the sky, the firework would continue going much farther than it would have normally gone. This technology is still used in rockets today, and is in part responsible for our vast improvement in rocket technology.
