The world is constantly evolving sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse, however a common theme felt by everyone is that it is getting more difficult to survive. The book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and the film Tomorrow When the War Began directed by Stuart Beattie, both share the message that sometimes you have to go outside your comfort zone in order to survive. The skillful use of characterisation, text structure, and setting, highlights this messaging.

Both texts contain an incident where someone must go outside of his/her comfort zone. In Tomorrow When the War Began this is shown with Fiona as she was shown as ‘princess’ like character meaning she is unfamiliar with basic survival skills and is uncomfortable with being out in the wild and having to work for a lot of simple things such as having food to eat. This is tested multiple times throughout the film as they originally are out camping on the trip for fun but it is also tested later on when they are required to live out in the forest to hide from the enemy soldiers. In The Hunger Games Foxface is an example of a similar character who is required to go outside their comfort zone. This is shown when she chooses to try and stealthily sneak towards people to take a small amount of their supplies for herself. The reason she chooses to gain food this way is as she is unable to obtain it any other way meaning that in order to survive she is required to do this. Through both of these examples it can be seen that the thematic message is highlighted through the text structure in both
