Can you imagine a world without love? In “The Giver” by Lois Lowry, she manages to create a world without color, love, and other freedoms we have on a daily basis. Jonas the main character in “The Giver” lives in a community that is trying to be a utopia, in their attempt to be a utopia they have taken away all freedoms to choose jobs, spouses, and even the ability to love and see color. Jonas was selected for a special job as someone that receives memories from the past and learns what love, color are also that they kill their elderly at old age and others for failing. He begins to believe that their society is not a utopia, but a dystopia. In “The Giver” there are no freedoms of color and diversity, in our society, freedoms are stopped when there is a chance of hurting others. Where should the line be drawn? …show more content…

Their community had to eliminate all colors, even of the peoples skin, in order to prevent discrimination and maintain public safety. The strategy works, but the people have barely any choice to decide anything for themselves. In the book Jonas said “If everything’s the same, then there aren’t any choices! I want to wake up in the morning and decide things! A blue tunic, or a red one.” He looked down at himself, at the colorless fabric of his clothing. “But it’s all the same, always.” (p.97). Jonas was extremely disenheartend to not have those choices. Their society went very much overboard on trying to eliminate discrimination and keep public safety.
