The Causes of the American Revolution On April 19, 1775, the battles of Lexington and Concord were fought. These were both the first battles of the American Revolution, a battle fought by America against England for independence. The English had been bad managers of the American colonies, and this was the turning point that gained America freedom in 1776. However, the reasons for this rebellion were surprising. America broke off from England because of the carelessness, taxation, and cruelty of the English government. The first reason that England’s citizens split off was because of its carelessness for the American colonies. For example, King George III gave land to other noblemen that the colonists were already occupying. When the French and Indian war was over, England put a tax on all imports due to the debts built up. This was not wrong, and the colonists agreed to it, so long as they could have some say in how the money was spent. However, England did not want the colonists to have any choice in what happened with their money, and this started the “no taxation without representation” that was one of the greatest factors that made America split off from England. Moreover, the English government later made it a point that it wasn’t about the money, but about the fact that they were taxing the colonists’ and the colonists could do nothing about it. Britain put a tax on tea that made it cheaper than any other tea that Americans were drinking. However, when tea arrived in Boston Harbor, dozens of men dressed as Native American warriors swarmed the ship and threw the tea into the Boston Harbor.
