In this essay I will be explaining how society was in 1930’s America and how people were being treated in the 1930’s based on the depression, racism, misogyny, names, power and the American dream. Firstly of Mice and Men was written in the 1930’s and was set in California. In 1930’s America, faced a problem which was known as the depression. This meant that when one business went down all the workers became unemployed, so no-one had any money.
It began with the creation of steam powered machines and factories. In the 1800s cities grew around factories a large population of workers moved from their homes in the country and migrated to the city to find employment. In the mid-19th century over half of the Britain population had moved into the city. Back then factories conditions where horrible because of the conditions it gave factory owners the opportunity to exploit their labors so they hired men, women, and children even though the children and women were highly favored they were only paid minimum wage even though they were making the same product. Workers would sometimes spend anywhere from twelve to fourteen hours a day working this process would be six to seven days a week.
There were a lot of children in one family, so money was an issue which was why most children worked. They were at home or at the factories they didn’t go
Imagine a world where there is a group who decides how people are going to look, act around each other, and perceive different issues and controversies. Now imagine that this represents our world. There is no need to imagine because this is how the world is since the beginning of humankind. For hundreds of years, there has been society pressures on many topics and issues. From race to body image, pressures to be “perfect” in the eyes of a powerful social group is present in any period of time in the Anthropocene Era.
Some of the conditions were low pays, no safe at all to work in, over crowed in factories, working days were long. Some people work 10 to 12 hours a day. There was no job security, no workman’s companion , no retirement fund.
During the 19th century America was faced with many problems. These problem ranged from children labor to unemployment. Some workers decided to form a group called "union", a group to call their own. Companies’ owners were paying workers less them they deserved. Being treated unfairly they came together creating three unions, one was the American Federation of Labor (AFL, OR AF of L).
1920s, also known as the “Roaring Twenties”, was a time where life was perfect and faster for Americans. People began the usage of cars, and automobile changed lives of many people (Crewe, 1). After World War I, the U.S. economy experienced massive growth during the 1920s. Production and industry changed while the assembly line increased production. The assembly line, developed by Henry Ford, was very important behind the change.
The working life families in factories are very unsafe and unhealthy. Many young children are workers that worked in factories. Children from a young age into their teenage years and possibly to their adulthood. The factories environment are unhealthy and unsafe that this can possibly cause death to anyone who are working in these conditions in the factories. The interview with Doctor Ward who was a medical professor for 30 years proved that the working life families shouldn’t work in the factory environment because of how unsafe and unhealthy they are.
Through these historical moments, protectors of the nation’s laborers arose and created systems for the safety and benefit of each working man or woman. As the US economy continues to stabilize after suffering a very large decline, Union's role in the economy has been a question mark of late. Different groups argue back and forth regarding whether or not labor unions would help or hurt the current US economy. While many can see the advantages of a large web of unions to strengthen the economy, others feel it takes too much of an effort to keep Unions running at top shape. Unions are undoubtedly beneficial to the economy, as they’ve proven to be intertwined with a well educated workforce, a strong economic foundation, and an increase in individual state economy.
