It first started with demonstrations: rallies and protests took place as labourers developed a “dangerous spirit of discontent with the Government” for many were dissatisfied with the unrealistic prices on grain thanks to the Corn Laws. The Corn Laws were instituted to assist local producers, and since the majority of lands were owned by companies due to the enclosure movement, most of the wealth went to the upper-class. Similarly, industrialization benefited not the workers the most, but instead the company owners; the “triumphs of machinery” and its “gain and glory” were to be only derived by “wealthy Liverpool and Manchester men.” (Document 4) Protests like such continued until the government began responding to the cries of the people. Under the “Hours of Labor in Factories Act” passed in 1844, work hours had been reduced to “ten hours per day” and “wages… have largely increased”.
Many people began to live in urban cities and worked all day to make a living. With these changes came new standards and many reforms. Factory Working Working in the 1800’s was hard and was very dangerous, by the mid 1800’s America was using machines to produce most things such as clothing, shoes, watches, , guns, and farming machines. The workers would work an average of 11.4 hours a day. The workers were very tired. The factories were very rugged and dangerous, there were fast rapidly moving parts exposed and that cuased many accidents with adults and children.

Factory owners sought to control and discipline their workforce through a system of long working hours, fines and low wages. In the early 1800’s, injuries were very common textile mills (Mill Children). Due to bad working conditions mill workers suffered from a lot of sicknesses (Cotton Dust & OSHA).The mill girl’s “normal shifts were usually 12-14 hours a day, with extra time required during busy periods. Workers were often required to clean their machines during their mealtimes” (Factory Life). In the 1840’s, workers experienced bad working conditions; in the novel Lyddie, Lyddie responds to these problems by ignoring them at first, but eventually speaking up.
Around the 18th Century there was an island as big as Louisiana that started to control one of the largest empire in the world that we are in now today, it has made history. The big giant place which was called the Great Britain. Since the different technological and commercials were up to high that’s why the great Britain has rose up to the the empire that it has became. Back around the late 18th Century you would’ve have to start working at a really young age, for an example there would be six years old little boys/girls that would be working in a factory. The owners of the factory has its positions that has opened up and many people wanted them.
