At the beginning of my baseball career, I would hit in the backyard with my Father just trying to make a solid connection with the ball. Once I had got on my first recreational baseball team at 8 years old I was able to hit pretty well. I was a good player until I got on my first travel baseball team, I struck out almost every time I was at the plate! I am convinced would have gotten kicked off the team the next year if dad wasn’t one of the coach’s.
My whole career first started from a sport called basketball. I was in 7th grade and we were aloud to do sports so i decided to be like my sister Yvonne and tryout for the team. When i tried out for the team i found out I didn’t make the team and i was kind of bummed, but when my Dad found out he told the coach that “ either Wilma and Yvonne join the team together or neither of them will’ and then we both were on the team. Basketball season went great if we were winning by a lot the coach would put me in only for a minute though.
My Dad would toss it to me in the living room and try to teach his one-to-two-year-old child to hit. But I wasn’t really put into the game till I was four years old. Baseball has impacted my life more than anything I have lived through. I believe baseball is more than a sport; it is a teacher. I am now nineteen years old playing most boys dream.
I was averaging 15 points a game my freshman year. I started getting frustrated because we oppurrnties losing .I was getting kicked out of practices and missing games . My teammates were blowing up my phone but I just ignored them . When I came to school everybody was asking me why haven’t I been at practice or been at games , I just told them I was taking a break from basketball because I was tired of losing and nobody else stepping up to help us win.
For example, when I first got in volleyball my first year which was sixth grade,I was probably the worst player since I had never played before. Consequently,I felt embarrassed going to practice or doing a skill in front of the coaches because I knew I wasn’t the best. In effect, that made me get inspired to practice more and get good at it. I started going more to open gym and would go to camps and other places where they would do off season. As a result, I ended up getting better and knowing more about the skills that I didn’t know as much or how to do them correctly.
My parents had always tried to set me up for success, they had figured out my love of baseball while I was still at a young age. They did everything in their power to be sure I could develop as a ballplayer. My dad even went as far as flatting out our backyard and placing down a batting cage so that I could practice whenever I wanted to. Even after practicing through rainstorms, and freezing cold weather, I was still “that kid” on the team. It was my first season on the big field.
On that summer I played basketball every single day ( with my brother or not). My brother played basketball against me all the time and everytime he would beat me. I think this is why a I am so good now, because that made me want to practice because I felt that I should be able to beat him ( even though he was in the ninth grade). So I pushed myself and played pickup games with him and his friends.

I started to practice at my house—it was the only hoop available for me at the time. Everyday, I would go outside and just shoot as many shots as I can so, I could make my form better. A few weeks of practicing, I started to see progress in my form—I made more shots than usual. Since I thought I was getting better, I decided to ask my parents if they could put me in a basketball team. My parents agreed without any hesitation.
