Darkness and blackness symbolize evil, loss of hope and deception. In the shakespearean play “Macbeth”, in the dark, cruel and evil deeds are done. Character in the play assume that the darkness hides their treacherous actions and keep them under the veil. In Macbeth, the darkness symbolizes evil, loss of hope and deception as witches meet and plan Macbeth’s doom, Macbeth hides his true identity and Lady Macbeth regrets killing King Duncan. In Macbeth, Act 1, Scene 1, witches meet at night, planning for Macbeth’s Downfall. Witches are evil and as shown in the play, they are using Macbeth as a puppet. He pretends to be loyal, and honest towards the King of Scotland and his friend Banquo. But he betrays them, and kills them because of his lust for power. In Act 1, Scene 5, when Macbeth acknowledges his wife, Lady Macbeth, about the witches’ prophecies and about King Duncan’s visit to their castle. She makes a plan to kill King Duncan so that Macbeth can become the King of Scotland. She convinces him to kill Duncan and tells him to look like a flower but be the serpent under it, hiding. Macbeth kills King Duncan at night when he is sleeping and blames it on Duncan’s guards. He kills his friend Banquo, because he was getting suspicious of Macbeth that he killed Duncan. Macbeth didn’t want his power to be transferred to anyone so he killed everyone that he thought will become a problem in anyway in future. He hired two henchmen and ordered them to kill Banquo and his son, Fleance; they were successful in killing Banquo but Fleance escaped. Macbeth put a mask on his face all the time and keeps everyone in dark. In Act 3, Scene 2, Macbeth says, “Come, seeling night, Scarf up the tender eye of pitiful day, And with thy bloody and invisible hand cancel and tear to pieces that great bond which keeps me pale!” (Line 51-55). He wants his henchmen to murder Banquo and his son at night so that no one ever finds out who killed them. In Act 1, Scene 5, she calls upon evil powers to fill herself with utmost cruelty and take away all the kindness and remorse she would have after she does any evil deeds. She persuades her husband to kill King Duncan and after that Macbeth started committing murderous actions. She can’t confess her malicious deeds nor can she stop her husband to kill the innocent family of Macduff or Banquo. She regrets convincing Macbeth to kill Duncan and she dreams about it everyday. In her sleep, she is tainted with blood. The more she tries to wasak them off, the more blood spots she gets on her body. She is assured that there is no hope of getting rid of this guilt, so she dies. In Act 5, Scene 1, she says in her sleep, hallucinating, “Yet who would have thought the old man to have so much blood in him?” She talks about Macbeth that no one would have ever thought about him being such a clever, wicked person.
