The Great Gatsby is a book set in the 1920’s, this is the time around prohibition, and money made you famous. Symbols can be found throughout this book. The green light symbolizes something different to different people. Geography plays a role in how one lives. Also, when Jay Gatsby dies at the end of the book, his funeral represents many things. Things can represent a big idea or belief and that is shown in The Great Gatsby. In the beginning of the book , the reader is told that Gatsby’s house is right across the bay from a green light. What the reader doesn’t know yet is that the light is at the end of Daisy’s dock. At one of Gatsby's parties he tells Jordan Baker, Daisy’s friend, the whole story of his love for Daisy. Jordan then told Nick and he was very surprised. At this point the reader recognizes that the houses placed perfectly across the bay isn’t a coincidence. “‘Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay”’(Fitzgerald, 78). The book takes place in Long Island, outside of New York. there are two “eggs” in this area. Each egg has its own type of people. East egg was made of people from old money. Old money is when a family is rich. West egg is made of people with new money. New money people are ones who make their own money in their life. Gatsby and Nick both live in west egg, Tom and Daisy live in east egg. People who live in east egg are show offs with their money, they like to let people know what they have to offer. People of west egg do not like to show off the money they have. In between the two eggs is the valley of ashes, this is where the poor citizens live. All of this people work everyday and barely make enough money to get by. This are the hard workers of the world, the people of east egg never work for anything. Depending on where one lives can help one determine that person's personality and
