College: what some people see as the greatest time of their lives, and others as a waste of time and money. As of last year, sixty-five percent of American high school graduates attended college after high school. Some will argue that college is necessary for a future, and some will say that it is just not worth it. Attending college is worth it because one will be exposed to more opportunities within a career path; however, there are jobs that can be obtained without a college education, but statistics show that unemployment is double for those who do not attend college versus those who do. Although college can be expensive and a lot of time, there are far more advantages than disadvantages of attending. Getting a secondary education, building a professional network, participating in all of the college experience, and opening oneself up to a world of new careers are just some of the benefits of going to college. More and more companies are beginning to require a college education to get a job, and this does not necessarily mean a four-year college. There are so many options for college, opportunities that do not cost a lot, and do not take up a great deal of time. Yes, there are a lot of jobs that do not require an education, but according to David Autor, “the true cost of a college degree is about negative $500,000. That’s right: Over the long run, college is cheaper than free. Not going to college will cost you about half a million dollars” (Leonhardt). When comparing two people in a career field, the one who went to college will be paid more than the one who did not.
