Research Proposal: Is Corporal Punishment the Right Decision?

There has been controversy over the subject of corporal punishment and its effectiveness in the last couple years. Everyone is in a debate whether corporal punishment is a necessary form of negative reinforcement. Some see it as abuse, and others see it as the quickest and most effective disciplinary action. Many psychologists have studied the behavioral patterns of children in the two different situations, recorded their results, and their belief on the subject.

In the scenario that my child is in the grocery store running up and down the aisles yelling, do I warn him of a punishment that might happen once I arrive home or do I threaten them of a spanking if they do not obey immediately? I believe that corporal punishment is the most effective punishment for children between the ages of 3-9 due to the fact that once they pass this age taking away their favorite device would be most effective. I understand that corporal punishment easily confused with abuse, but what matters is how the parent goes about the spanking. Spanking should be the last resort, it should be moderate, and it will not result in psychological issues in the future. Spanking helps the child decide which choice is the right choice. I used this article to shine a positive light on physical discipline and show that spanking is not abuse and that children are not going to grow into emotionally damaged adults because they were spanked.
Gershoff, Elizabeth, and Larzelere, Robert. “Is Corporal Punishment an Effective Means of Punishment?” American Psychological Association (2002) Web. This article shows the point of view of two different psychologists with opposing views and compares the two. Gershoff is opposed to the idea of anything physical for punishment and says that it should cease. While Larzelere disagrees that it should be thrown out. He believes that there is not enough accurate information to form this theory that corporal punishment is wrong.
I used this article to show how there are psychologists that understand that there is not enough information to factually say that corporal punishment is an absolute bad idea. I also used this article to show some opposing views.
