The Effects Of Physical Punishment Physical punishment increases the risk of negative development outcomes. In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the narrator, Scout Finch, gets spanked for swearing. Scout was swearing at her cousin Francis because he was saying derogatory phrases about her father, Atticus. Francis was also antagonizing her. Scout fought with Francis and had already been warned by her Uncle Jack that if she swore she would be in trouble and get spanked, he did just that and never listened to her side of the story.
