Ron Williamson grew up in Ada, Oklahoma, the youngest of three children and his parents’ only son. He played baseball at Asher High School, as his parents moved there so he could play under the school’s legendary coach, Murl Bowen. After hitting 500 in the state championships his senior year, he was the 41st pick in the 1971 amateur draft. He turned down a scholarship offer to the University of Oklahoma and signed and spent the 1972 season primarily with the Coos Bay-North Bend A’s hitting 265 in 52 games in 1973. After he hurt his shoulder, the career ended and he returned home in the late 1970’s.
Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States of America gave his 2nd inaugural address a month before the intense civil war’s end. In this address to the Union, he provides strong facts while also giving them the actual examples of the crime the confederates has committed. He is staggering the audience while also surprising them with a short speech rather than a lengthy one. In this speech, he uses several rhetorical strategies like his manipulation of diction, tone, and syntax in order to achieve his purpose. Lincoln’s use of diction is very informative, he uses uniquely uses big words which he mixes with quotes, imagery and other things to strengthen his statements.
Lucille Parkinson McCarthy, author of the article, “A Stranger in Strange Lands: A College Student Writing Across the Curriculum”, conducted an experiment that followed one student over a twenty-one month period, through three separate college classes to record his behavioral changes in response to each of the class’s differences in their writing expectations. The purpose was to provide both student and professor a better understanding of the difficulties a student faces while adjusting to the different social and academic settings of each class. McCarthy chose to enter her study without any sort of hypothesis, therefore allowing herself an opportunity to better understand how each writing assignment related to the class specifically and “what
Owens’s reasoning and use of evidence is effective in proving his standpoint on women in the military. By using Captain Katie Petronio’s personal experience of being in active duty allows the reader to have a better understanding on what Owens is trying to express. Captain Katie Petronio claims that her body deteriorated at a much faster rate than the male Marine soldiers. As well, she also states that she ended up obtaining a serious health condition due to the stress of being in active duty. Overall, Owens use of evidence, specifically the Captain 's personal experience, further grants readers to have a better way of understanding his standpoint on this subject.
For black back then, when you have to go to court you are more than likely going to be guilty. Tom Robinson is in the book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, in this small town in Alabama named Maycomb. This is about Tom Robinson getting accused of raping a white girl by the name of Mayeela Ewell. The Ewell family is one of the meanest families in Maycomb, but Mayella still has a higher ranking than Tom. This shows how racist the town of Maycomb is and some families that live there.
In the book, “To Kill a Mockingbird”, by Harper Lee, Tom Robinson has been accused of raping Mayella Ewell. He is well known for being a Christian man, but Mr. Ewell claims he saw him raping his daughter. I believe Tom Robinson is innocent because of the Ewell family history, lack of evidence, and he has a disability that causes a problem with the testimony. The Ewell family is nowhere near perfect. Mr. Bob Ewell is known for his violent actions and words.

In “Proficiency” Shannon Nichols, writes about herself as a young girl from Ohio who describes her experience taking the standardized writing proficiency test. Nichols says, "The standardized writing proficiency test is a test that high school students in Ohio must pass in order for them to receive their high school diplomas". The test covered reading, math, citizenship, and writing. She was a smart student and her GPA was never below 3.00, and she was also a good writer because in the passage, she stated, “A poem I wrote was put on television once (Nichols).”
This grants more creative freedom for the writer, while also instilling the different template methods through practice. In spite of the logical advantages that the templates give the writer, some people are still skeptical of this type of method. Many believe that these templates are a juvenile form that inhabits creativity. One student even proclaims, “I’m in college now, this is third-grade-level stuff.” (10) Regardless of these students claims that templates are too simplistic and less imaginative, Graff and Birkensteins’ idea that one must learn through template forms in order to enhance their skills in the future should be endorsed.
Audrey, I truly appreciated Congressman McEwen’s analogy and the PIE formula. The evidence provided in the presentations were constructive and provided tools to sharpen critical thinking skills which translate into debating and arguing persuasively. Christians and real Jews are held to higher standards than liberals. Due to original sin, it is challenging for humans to maintain integrity and character; however, it should be a goal to strive to do our best, since our behavior is being scrutinized constantly. Conservatives do respect the unalienable rights of all Americans and extend the philosophy of Compassionate Conservatism to the disenfranchised and the invisible majority (Bush, 2002).
JL Mackie was persuasive in his argument by showing that belief in an almighty God is not rational. He proves this by posing the problem of evil. According to JL Mackie, if God exists and is omniscient, omnipotent, and good then evil would not exist. However, evil exists in this world, sometimes in the form of undeserved suffering (diseases that affect humans, earthquakes, famines ...) and others perpetrated by man (murders, wars ...). If God exists and has the capability to be powerful, good, omniscient and omnipotent, why would he let evil be perpetrated?
Throughout my education, writing strategies persisted to be a challenge for me. I dreaded writing because I could never find ways to transition my thoughts from my mind to the paper. Ironically, a class that petrified me due to the amount of required writing ended up helping me in numerous ways. English 1301 and my professor prepared me for college and real life by giving me a foundation of effective learning strategies.
As I was reading Melissa Duffy’s “Inspiration, and Craig Vetter’s “Bonehead Writing,” I found myself connecting with Vetter’s paper more than Duffy’s. I found that the presentation in “Bonehead Writing” to capture my attention, and that Vetter’s feelings about writing was similar to my opinion on writing. Through his wording and humor, I think Craig Vetter wrote the best essay. I find that the wording and presentation of an article or essay influences my opinion of the writer, and it affects how I receive the idea they are trying to present to me. Craig Vetter uses a blunt approach to convey his idea that writing is nearly impossible to teach, and describes writing as “A blood sport, a walk in the garden of agony every time out.”
Over the course of the semester, my main goal was to become a more precise writer and develop my identity as a writer. According too, the Portfolio Letter assignment sheet, becoming a better writer consists of precise planning, draft and revising. It also includes understanding a variety of academic genres by examining the basic characteristics that defines each type. In order too efficiently meet my goal of becoming a better writer, it was very important to have my work evaluated by others and myself as well. The use of rhetorical knowledge, critical thinking, reading and writing all are the important aspects in this course.
Writing has always been an issue but yet interesting subject of mine. As hard as I try and write essays, and papers I just can’t get the hang of writing. But after taking this class, I did learn different writing technique and improved my writing proficiency, material body of formatting, and how to uncovering and properly use sources. Through class exams, essays, and a research paper, I was able to learn new writing skills. Although I have learned a variety of things, my writing still needs improvement.
