One of the most important people in the Roman Empire that helped shape the events in the years 64 and 65 AD was Nero, the Emperor of Rome. Even though he is most remembered by his insanity and cruelty, Nero also helped the people and the city of Rome. He did this by passing laws that made houses and bridges safer. He volunteered to help build canals instead of hiring men to build them for him. He strengthened the economy by almost completely stopping forgery. He took an interest in the arts, especially music. He was very social with the emperors of surrounding lands and would often give them gifts. But all of these good deeds did not make up for the atrocities he committed beforehand. Nero’s family was known for being very harsh and he carried on this trait. He created brutal games for public amusement, often involving senators and high ranking officials competing in fights against animals. Considering the land and materials in the area, this was a perfect place for a fire. Although fires often started during the summer in Rome, The Roman knew that this fire was an act of arson. Rome was set on fire for six days and seven nights. The Romans managed to get the fire under control, but this was only for a brief period of time. The fire managed to start up again and lasted for another three days. Many people died and lost their homes to the fire. Although only a few of the districts of Rome were completely in ashes, over half of them had been seriously damaged.
