Romeo and Juliet's relationship is based on lust because of how long they knew each other, their age, and their forbidden love. A relationship based on true love takes time to develop. The text states, “Now Romeo is beloved and loves again, Alike bewitched by the charm of looks”(Shakespeare 2.Prologue.5-6). Romeo and Juliet had just met and they were already bewitched by each other (2.Prologue.6).
Romeo and Juliet claim that they love each other, but that isn’t possible. How can they possibly be in love when they have only known each other for a few short hours before declaring their undying love and uniting in Holy Matrimony? Love is a limitless and condition-less devotion, based on an intimate knowledge, to another person, whereas lust is an emotional obsession based on physical chemistry and appearance. Lust initiates a desire to acquaint ourselves with someone, but our interactions with and increased knowledge of a person are what cause us to love. Romeo and Juliet definitely lusted after each other.
The play Romeo and Juliet is about a forbidden love between teenagers, but it can be argued that the plot is not driven by love, but by the fatal compulsiveness of Romeo. He believes himself in love even if the person he is after has never even glanced his way. This compulsive nature is first foreshadowed in the text when Romeo says to his cousin, Benvolio, "Out of her favor where I am in love" (Shakespeare 1.1.158). In this quote he verbally expresses how he has given his whole heart to someone who he knows will not love him back. " Of a despised life, closed in my breast, by some vile forfeit of untimely death" (Shakespeare 1.4.111-112), Romeo later says as he describes the feeling of foreboding from his dream.
He comes to her to confess his love to her, confessing “with love’s light wings did I o’erperch these walls; For stony limits cannot hold love out: And what love can do, that dares love attempt; Therefore thy kinsmen are no let me.” [2.2.66-69] Romeo knows he’s not supposed to fall for a Capulet as a Montague but lust can’t help itself. To which Juliet replies “If they do see thee, they will murder thee.” [2.2.70] Lust keeps Romeo from feeling a sense of danger nor does he feel the need to take caution, lust makes Romeo desperate for Juliet’s beauty that he will do anything to get it. Now that he has fallen too deep in lust’s mind control he makes a promise to Juliet that they would get married despite it being heavily forbidden and they had only just met moments before.
William Shakespeare wrote Romeo and juliet in a way that makes you think that Romeo and Juliet's love is completely based on strong sexual desire, the whole play moves extremely fast for a normal romantic experience, this can take up to a few years for a strong loving relationship, in Romeo and Juliets case in just around four days, Romeo meets Juliet, moves on from Rosaline, makes his decision that he is in love with Juliet, marries Juliet, and sleeps with her in that short period of time. This opposes two sides of an argument, this relationship is lust, or is this relationship true love. In my opinion, Romeo and Juliet were infatuated with each other and were acting irrationally when they got married. Both Romeo and Juliet are teenagers and were not old enough to be “in love”. I feel this way because Juliet was about to marry someone who her parents were making her marry. She simply married Romeo because she had feelings for him and did not want to marry Paris. Romeo was lovesick for Rosaline and thinks that when he sees Juliet it is love at first sight.

The two lovers stayed secret, but was it really love they felt or was it the feeling of excitement and danger from getting caught? It becomes apparent that the love they shared was not genuine. Despite the tragic end of their story, there are many reasons why their love may not have been true or they may not have had true love.
When Love is True True love is a defendable emotion worth personally sacrificing for. In William Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Romeo Montague falls in love with Juliet Capulet, the Capulets being revivals of the Montague family. In the late 1400’s, when the two families are fighting, there is a strict, no contact pact between the two families set by the Prince of the town they reside in: Verona, Italy. From meeting and marrying Juliet, illegally returning from Mantua out of exile to see his supposedly dead wife, and taking his own life to be in heaven where she appears to be, Romeo shows that he is truly in love with Juliet and that he is willing to do anything to be with her.
The theme of the scenes chosen is love and this theme is quite visible in the play due to the love at first sight concept shown by Romeo and Juliet. The scenes chosen are Act 1 Scene 5 due to the love at first sight concept in that scene between Romeo and Juliet showing how crazy love can change your mind and an instant. The second scene chosen is Act 2 Scene 5 when a fight is happening in the Capulet house hold because Juliet is refusing to marry the County Paris because she loves Romeo. The third scene is Act 5 Scene 3 when Romeo finds Juliet and presumes she is dead and wants to lay with her for eternity, this shows the true love between the two. These scenes go through Romeo and Juliet’s stages of love, showing Romeo and Juliet meeting and instantly being drawn to each other, also showing that they cannot be together due to the feud between the families.
The Fake Love Romeo and Juliet are not in true love. They just fall in love instantly at the second they meet. There is no time for them to have a deeper communicate to know the real quality of each other, thus their unreliable love is only established on the appearance. For Juliet, love with Romeo is just a way to escape from her fate to marry a people that she has never met before. And since Juliet is just 13 years old, she even can’t tell the different between “like” and “love”.
It pretty much covers this love throughout the entire story line. Although one example of this is when Romeo and Juliet first meet, Romeo quotes, “O, then, dear saint, let lips do what hands do. They pray; Grant thou, lest faith turn to despair.” (1.5.102-3). In this case Romeo is wanting Juliet to kiss him, which in this same conversation juliet wants the same thing.
Romeo and Juliet really are not in love with each other they are in love with the idea of each other. Given both of their history with past partners it placed both in the line of just dealing for a former love inters. Romeo was more into morning over the love he believed he had for Rosaline per Act 2 scene 3 when Farther was inferring that he is to young to know about what love is because all he does is abuses over the female. Romeo is so a love structed puppy that is being led by the collar for Juliet. Love can be at first sight yet the two star cross lovers are just not a good example of that theory.
The whole play is mainly centered around true love and in the play, Romeo and Juliet’s love toward each other is a prime example of romantic love. Here is one of the many examples of true love. “O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night Like a rich jewel in an Ethiop's ear— Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear. So shows a snowy dove trooping with crows As yonder lady o'er her fellows shows.
Romeo and Juliet: How love becomes lust due to a misunderstanding Although the play of Romeo and Juliet is considered one of the greatest love stories of all time, it is mostly just love being mistaken for lust. There is love, but it is in places where you generally would not notice, and there is not much of it. For example, you only find romantic love between Romeo and Juliet once, and it is one sided. The rest of what happens between them is lust. There is other examples of love between other minor characters.
