The Great Gatsby is a great American novel because of the hope and the symbols and life lessons it gives the readers. it shows how living in the moment is the way to live. the idea of Gatsby as poor man that worked his way up the ladder and became wealthy but with no family or wife he was never complete. This shows the readers money cannot buy happiness. Fitzgerald uses gatsby as a great example of someone trying to live the american dream in the beginning of the book. Gatsby started looking for the american dream at a young age and wanted to become successful. Gatsby created this book, and each page had a different thing to do to become more knowledgeable. one of the things were, "Read one improving book or magazine per week." this really Showed That Gatsby wants to improve and succeed in life. The green light Gatsby often looked at symbolized the American Dream. Green can symbolize money and can mean "go," like on a stoplight. The hope for happiness is something that Daisy wanted, but realizing she married the wrong guy shocked her. Daisy thought she had everything, happiness, wealth, and family, the American dream. she later discovers that she has nothing! the american dream had destroyed her on the inside and out. Daisy thought she was in love but realized that she actually only married tom for his money and loved his money not him. when daisy hung out with gatsby for the first time in several years she starts crying because she realizes she could have married gatsby and got money AND love.
