There are many different ways that the authors use irony to develop their tone in stories. In the necklace, and how to be a winner, both authors use situational and verbal irony to develop their tone in the story. Tone plays a key role in a story because you need to have tone and mood to develop the overall atmosphere for the reader. Situational irony is when something happens that is very different from what we as the readers were expecting to happen. Verbal Irony is when the speaker intends to be understood as meaning something that contrasts with the literal or usual meaning of what he says. The author continuously uses verbal irony to show his tone towards the topic. The author talks about the ten commandments, which is very ironic because this guy doesn't seem religious at all. He is basically showing that he isn't religious, he just used it to be ironic. In the first sentence of the story we really get to know this guy through his word choice. He is demanding and a coach because I have had coaches like that before. One sentence into the story and I already know the type of person I will be hearing about for the next several pages. Another thing that sticks out to me is his sentence structure in the second paragraph. We see that the coach is rambling and trying to get everything out at once to try and have an immediate impact on the kids which I have witnessed firsthand before. This author also uses word choice and diction throughout the story to develop the overall tone as well. Lastly, this author uses personification in the second to last paragraph of the book. We see the coach talk about how the world will eat you for breakfast if you don’t do something about it. This could show that maybe he was a loser and came from the bottom just like the kids that he coached. Maybe he wants them to start off as winners and not be sucked into losing by temptations. When he says that there are winners and losers and that is it in the world we know that he has had experience on both sides of that before because he talks with a deeper understanding.
