The assassination of Archduke of Austria, Francis Ferdinand by a Bosnian patriot was responsible for the initial outbreak of the conflict. On July 28, 1914, WWI began. Fighting began between Austria-Hungary, who declared war on Russia, an ally of Serbia. Millions of people were affected by this war. More civilian population was involved in world war one than ever before in previous wars.
