When I was younger, I was probably too sensitive about the tragedy and could never conceive why people would enjoy Romeo and Juliet. Now that I can handle it as an adult, I enjoyed the comedic bits scattered throughout the melodrama. For example, one of my favorite lines in the play was Juliet’s statement, “You kiss by the book.” Maybe I have a weird sense of humor, but it seemed like an absurd thing to say after being kissed by the man of your dreams. Along with this, I amused by the “Do you bite your thumb at me” exchange and “Your love says, like an honest gentleman--Where is your mother?” In general, I was pleasantly surprised at how well a lot of the jokes had aged. I would have preferred her to show more interest in the dialogue, but it does make sense in the context of plays being meant to be seen and not read. The film version clearly showed that Juliet was just as enchanted with Romeo as he was with her, even if she still just stood still while he kissed her. One thing I did not understand about the play was the Montague/Capulet feud. Everyone made such a big deal about it, but when Romeo crashed the Capulet party, Lord Capulet told Tybalt to leave him alone because of his reputation in Verona as a “virtuous and well-governed youth.” The reason for their hatred was also never explained, so I feel like the Capulets and the Montagues could have learned to accept that their children were in
