During the 1800s, both slavery and women’s rights were controversial topics. The Abolitionists were trying to abolish slavery, and the Women’s Rights movement was trying to give women more rights. Both movements have greatly impacted the United States greatly, and still influence the world today. Both of these movements fought for the rights of specific groups of people. The Abolitionist group began in the 1830s, aiming to destroy slavery. In 1831, William Garrison published an abolitionist newspaper called the Liberator. The paper became the nation’s leading anti-slavery publication, influencing many people. African Americans in the North were strong supporters of the abolitionist movement, urging slaves to, if necessary, rebel against their owners for freedom. This movement was started by Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Stanton, when the two women were excluded from an anti-slavery conference because of their genders. Stanton wrote a Declaration of Sentiments that listed all the injustices that women suffered. This began a battle for the right of women to vote. The movement won some victories, gaining women new career opportunities and starting girl schools and colleges. The Women’s Rights movement impacted our nation hugely. Both the Women’s Rights movement and the Abolitionist movement are very important. Most would agree that they have both had an equal positive effect on the lives of Americans. The two movements are very similar to one another: one trying to gain rights for women, and the other attempting to win rights for African Americans. Both of the movements eventually met their goals, as today, America is free of slaves and women can vote. These two movements were both great successes for humanity.
