The trenches were a constant threat to soldiers who spent time there, where enemy fire, gas attacks, and disease were prominent. Any romanticized perceptions of war were dashed upon experience of trench warfare, which was instead characterized by brutality, inhumanity, and exposure to enemy fire and disease. The use of new industrial killing technologies also contributed to the change in attitude towards war. Machine guns, tanks, and poison gas were new weapons introduced during World War I, which made warfare more deadly and efficient.
