I have never realized how important having darkness was to the world. After reading Paul Bogard 's persuasive essay convincing his readers that natural darkness should be preserved, I’ve come to realize how important the subject matter is. Bogard built his argument with lots of examples and research. He persuades his audience by explaining how darkness influences human health, how the environment relies on darkness, and how the world is trying to fix this dilemma.
After reading Bogard’s essay it becomes clear how much darkness, or rather the lack thereof, affects human health. Melatonin is produced while we are asleep, and falling asleep is difficult without darkness. If our bodies cannot produce enough melatonin, we can quickly become depressed. “Sleep disorders have been linked to diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and depression,” Bogard incorporates statistics and factual evidence to support his thesis, this makes his essay ten times more persuasive.
Another way Bogard’s information helps his argument is describing how the environment also relies on darkness. Lack of darkness could hurt nocturnal species. Animals such as skunks, bats, and raccoons. He is proving that lack of darkness is a real subject matter that people need to be aware of and how some of the world is already in the process of fixing it. “Already, many cities and towns across North America and Europe are changing to LED streetlights, which offer dramatic possibilities for controlling wasted light.” Bogard is using the technique of bandwagon to establish his argument here. He’s explaining how communities and people are already in the process of saving darkness and that his audience should jump on that opportunity as
