Are the laws of the justice system biased or fair to all or just a few citizens? Does it matter the seriousness of the crime that was committed? In the film Law Abiding Citizen a man named Clyde Shelton lost his family to a home invasion where his wife and daughter were raped and killed. Clyde wanted to see Darby, the man who did this to feel what his family felt, but a district attorney named Nick Rice made a deal with Darby. Darby was only sentenced to five years while his partner Aimes was sentenced to death and he was in shock by what was occurring. Nick explained to Clyde that if they took this case to court and were to lose, then Darby would walk free without any punishment. Nick had a wife and a daughter and he was more involved with work than to be with his own family. His daughter played a cello and had recitals that she would play in and he had never been to one of them, he would always tell her that he was working to put the bad guys away. When his wife needed him at home with them, he was more interested in work then to go home and be there for his wife and daughter. Clyde was big on being there for his family, while Nick was involved when he wanted to be. Darby’s partner Aimes received the death penalty, but was not given a fair trial. In the Bill of Rights, it says, “In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial” (Amendment VI). The justice system was letting a killer out in exchange for a confession, if a killer confesses then they deserve the maximum sentencing. Bargaining with a criminal who is guilty of a serious crime should not result in the minimum sentencing of that one individual, while one who was just there at the wrong time is punished worse.
