The use of social media, has become a powerful tool of the 21st century, increasingly connecting people, ideas and corporations. Social media has brought many advantages such as the increasing interconnectedness and the rapid spread of information, in addition to providing minority groups with a platform to promote social change powerfully challenging institutions and the ill treatment of individuals. Social media has played a major role in facilitating the viral spread of #black lives matter, on both Facebook and twitter, allowing the movement to mobilise through social media where a sense of community is fostered and created as a powerful form of resistance, against the injustices and brutality faced by the Black Community at the hands of the criminal justice system. The extensive use of social media by this social justice movement, has been used as a powerful tool for social change through the discussion of race politics and discourses, and the need to challenge a policing system heavily promoting the ill-treatment, discrimination and corrupt practices of African Americans. The case of social movements highlights a major advantage of social media today as it has been used extensively in the fight for social justice for African Americans and the need for equal treatment and inclusiveness of ethnic minority groups.
