The Other Wes Moore is a reality because this is what really happens in the inner cities. It is a problem, and it affects the future generations. Two kids, same name, and similar situation ended up completely different people. Poverty is a problem because both Wes Moore’s mothers are single, and couldn’t finish college due to work and providing for the family. She didn’t want to and couldn’t really afford it, but sent Wes to military school. She knew they could control him, and hopefully the rebellion would stop. She could not keep watching her son go down the wrong path, getting into drugs, graffiti, and being arrested. It was not a quick process, but military school changed Wes. Wes started to care about his grades, and he was promoted. “I was now a platoon sergeant, a cadet master sergeant, and the youngest s minor noncommissioned officer in the entire corps” (Moore 115). The article talks about memoirs creating interpersonal relationships and struggles to create a relatable and engaging experience for the reader, “A lot of well-written memoirs aren't about how interesting and unique the writer is; instead they explore issues, ideas, and emotions that other people can relate to, being part of the human experience" (Brown 129). I thought that this is exactly what the author, Wes Moore, was doing. He showed how real the problem with the inner city and drugs is. It is not easy for those kids; growing up without fathers or mothers or maybe neither. You start becoming more and more like the people you hang out with, and for these kids it’s gangs and kids everywhere who are bad influences. The author Wes Moore would have most likely taken the same route as the other Wes Moore if it weren’t for military school.
