What Is Victor Doing Good

As I read the novel, I yield to the temptation of focusing on whether what Victor did/ was doing is good or bad. The answer to this question flips back and forth at different points during the novel. It is difficult to say outright that by creating the monster, what he did was good. However, he was driven by a quest for knowledge, and I found it difficult to say that what he was aiming to do was bad without implying that the search for knowledge could be inherently bad. Also, after the creation of the monster, knowledge of its crimes, and impending thirst for other crimes, the question arises again of whether Victor is doing good or bad. The creation of the monster results from Victor’s innocent desire to conquer the knowledge of creating an animal as complex and wonderful as man and possibly preventing humans from any death other than a violent one. It can be argued that his motivations were good as he was seeking to create for humans, what he would consider, a happy life- possibly the permanent restoration of health. This could have been because of the horridness of the sight of the creature or the realization of what he had done. The danger that Victor found himself in, his family and, as he acknowledged, all human beings, forces him to ponder the extent of the negative side of his creation. It becomes clear that he did not think of all the consequences during the process of creating the monster. This, I would use to support an argument that the Victor genuinely believe that he was doing something good as he saw it as helping human beings, and with this genuineness, I would lean towards an argument which states that Victor was doing good. I would argue for the intent component for such an act being considered good or bad. However, this does not take away from the fact that he was irresponsible with what could be called dangerous
