One area of the writing process that still needs further development is choosing a topic. I find choosing a topic difficult because depending on what the subject it is, there can be a lot of different topics I could choose. Also, something else I’ve learned from the writing process is that revising and editing are the most important steps in writing an essay. These two steps are important because it helps crisp up and fix any mistakes in the essay.
Question 1 Why we write? Writing is a basic way to express your feelings, thoughts, opinion, and learning. A primary way to evaluate a person’s learning and intellect in college, the workplace, or even in the community is how the person writes about different things and shares his or her aspects. Writing helps in training a person’s communication and critical thinking skills. It helps in identifying someone’s personality and also makes an individual’s thinking and knowledge noticeable and long-lasting.
In addition to writing for purpose, I was also able to use evidence to form and support arguments in a research paper. I did this when composing my essay "Cosmetic Surgery: A Risky Investment. " This kind of writing demanded more from me than the personal narrative. It required supporting evidence from three academic journals, along with my own opionion which I used to support my thesis and back argumentative points. By doing this, it allowed me to hopefully convince an adudience to consider my standpoint.
My weakness are in the organization of my information and my style of writing. My first strength is content. While writing a paper, finding good text evidence is extremely important. Lucky for me, finding applicable text evidence is one of my strengths.
I’ve learned so much from the use of Aristotelian Appeals to signal phrases to quote sandwiches. As a college reader and writer, I’ve developed my skills from writing multiple informative essays, journals, and peer feedbacks. My skills developed the most when I was writing my longer works. After reading Stephen King's essay "Reading to Write" (72) it opened my eyes for writing. Although being a professional novelist isn't a goal I want to pursue in my life, writing is something I will need to learn how to do with good form. When it comes to the writing department, it's not one of my best skills. King says, "Good writing, teaches the learning writer about style, graceful narration, plot development, the creation of believable characters, and truth-telling" (73). I will try my best to become a good writer.
Keohane quotes political scientist Brendan Nyhan, researcher for the Michigan Study “The general idea is that it’s absolutely threatening to admit you’re wrong” (1). It’s sinister to admit that you were wrong in something that you believe in, and worse to admit it on social media. So an individual wanting to avoid this dilemma will simply find any sort of information that can somehow show that their opinion is right and post it to their social media page, regardless if there are facts to counter it. Even if a person is willing to see information that counters their opinion or someone wants to prove the other wrong, those individuals may not read the facts because the article maybe too long. Carr explains that while using the internet we have lost concentration on deep reading (1).
As I was reading Melissa Duffy’s “Inspiration, and Craig Vetter’s “Bonehead Writing,” I found myself connecting with Vetter’s paper more than Duffy’s. I found that the presentation in “Bonehead Writing” to capture my attention, and that Vetter’s feelings about writing was similar to my opinion on writing. Through his wording and humor, I think Craig Vetter wrote the best essay. I find that the wording and presentation of an article or essay influences my opinion of the writer, and it affects how I receive the idea they are trying to present to me. Craig Vetter uses a blunt approach to convey his idea that writing is nearly impossible to teach, and describes writing as “A blood sport, a walk in the garden of agony every time out.”
My history as a writer has been a bit of a struggle of slow development. From a young age I had a hard time with spelling and this is still a trouble area for me, even with the help of autocorrect. As I grew in age and as a writer my problematic area became not including enough nitty gritty details. My bad experiences that I recall would always involve the start of writing because I struggle with beginning paragraphs. Also, I tend to use the ending paragraph to just repeat myself, so overall my first and last paragraphs are usually shit.
And, you need to write all the negative and positive things by use quotes, paraphrase and summary to present all the sides in your argument, it is very helpful to develop your writing skills. In addition, I developed my own style by reading
When I write, I either get stuck or write paragraphs. I like to write about everything that I ponder about, have ideas for, or read. I like to write mostly realistic fiction or nonfiction. I like to write facts or things that might actually happen. I don’t like writing untrue or fiction information(Except if it has something to do with either utopian and dystopian fiction) .
The comments from my instructor, the online material, my research, the online writing center and comments from other students in the discussion boards have helped me so much to improve my writing skills. In the writing process, the step that I feel I have improved a lot is editing, as I am constantly reading my writings and editing them as I finish them, over and over again before I publish them. The steps in the writing process that I like the most are finding a topic in the Pre-writing step and Drafting. I like having a lot of ideas floating around and think about which idea is the best and the most exciting topic to talk about.
What does writing mean to me? Writing means getting people engaged in your piece. It means people wanting to keep reading what you wrote. The biggest thing about writing to me is expressing your thoughts and letting your mind go. Using good word choice and having a strong voice in the writing is something that makes it good.
Writing had always been one of my strengths, but it was challenging to take that initial step past the sixth form style of writing essays. Moving past this phase has greatly opened my mind.
