At AANPCB, the Business Manager, John Smith provides the three practices of exemplary leadership by “monitoring employees’ activities, determining whether the organization is moving toward its goals, and making corrections as necessary” (Daft, 2011, chap 1). The three practices include: model the way, inspired a shared vision, and challenge the process (Kouzes & Posner, 2002). Model the Way. Smith model the way by swaying his voice and affirming shared values. As a Business Manager of AANPCP, Smith shows the critical importance of leading by example through showing up early to work and often times staying up late or working on weekends.
When hearing good work, thoughts of just doing things successfully probably come to mind. After reading, Howard Gardner’s “Good Work”, a person will see that it is much more complex than that. To successfully analyze good work, a person must also read; “Pyramids vs. Pancakes” by Michael Lewis. Lewis discusses the structural dynamic that can affect the exchange of knowledge in a business. By utilizing both these readings, a reader can properly asses for knowledge exchange via communication and determine whether a person or corporation is truly doing good work.

This essay explores my current company commander to address whether he is a leader, manager, both, or neither. First, if I were asked this question before doing any of the required research, my immediate answer would have been, “a manager.” However, I believe my company commander feels he is more of a leader than a manager. After reading the background material from Avery, Hiriyappa, and Kumar, my answer is still the same but with one addition; “he is a manager who demonstrates some leadership abilities and qualities.”
I. Introduction The purpose of this memo is to identify what leadership styles work based on internal and external changes taking place. I focus on the following three CEOs: Jennifer Pulski of Change.org, Kevin Sharer of Amgen, and Lynn Good of Duke Energy. I chose to focus on these leaders because they had all previously failed and held themselves accountable for doing so. Each CEO also represented an industry where the product was needed, required to be reliable and changed lives.

Like any style of leadership the authentic leader will only work in certain circumstances and while it can be used in part, it may not be the goto for certain areas of interest, though being authentic and real is a major part of most successful leadership styles. Anne Mulcahy become the CEO of Xerox after working for the company for twenty-five years in different positions, including management positions, but never anything as high-up as where most CEO’s would be picked from.
The author worked hard and by the age of 50 developed many companies and became the co-star of the hit show Shark Tank. Throughout this brutal journey, Robert constantly learned many lessons he would later compile in a book called The Will to Win. The main focus of this book is to teach the reader about the many ways of taking charge in real life situations, in order to be successful and outshine those around them. This paper is informed by an interview carried out with the Chief Executive Officer of Southwest Airlines, Gary Clayton Kelly. Kelly was chosen because of his success at the airlines, which has seen him transform the company into the nation’s largest domestic passenger carrier. Kelly has held the position since 2008. Prior to becoming the CEO, he had worked with Southwest Airlines for over 30 years since joining as Controller.
As we have seen anyone can become a manager in a positional sense, however to become a truly effective leader there are certain skills, attitudes and behaviours that must be displayed. Even if these skills are not innate, using Adair’s Action Centred leadership model (8) we can see that it is possible to learn to become an effective leader. Using this model, we see that effective leaders are responsible and display skills in managing these three areas, which are all distinct but also overlap: the task, the group and the individual. Effective leaders manage the task by identifying the goals and direction of an organisation and have a very clear vision of what their aim and purpose is.

Leaders come in many different shapes and forms. Some leaders only care about the business and task at hand, some leaders care too much for their employees, and other leaders have a great mix of both worlds; those are the types of leaders to have in every company. Leaders need to be fully invested not only in the business to succeed, but they need to make sure their employees are taken care of just as well as the company. Within this paper will discuss the reasons that leaders need to be involved not only within the business, but with the employees too. Theodore Roosevelt described how a caring leader should be in the workforce.
