Everyone in this world is diverse, and not everybody is willing to accept the

people around them. The collection of stories that we have read in this unit all show

people’s separate outlooks in life. It is important to accept various types of people

surrounding you. In order to get a broader outlook in life, it is good to be rational by just

giving everyone a chance. In the story “What of This Goldfish Would You Wish,” Sergei does not trust

Yonatan, because of the memories he has from his childhood in Russia. In the text it

states “In Russia, when Sergei was young, it happened plenty.” (page 5, lines 56-57).

Sergei just jumped to conclusions, thinking that Yonatan was going to

steal his goldfish. Sergei was just worried that he was going to lose his best friend. In the short story “The Lottery” this small village has an annual lottery to stone

one of the citizens of their town. Not everyone agrees with this annual tradition. “They

do say, that over in the North Village they’re talking of giving up the lottery.” (page 30,

lines 191-193).”Some places have already quit lotteries,” Mrs. Adams said. (page 31,

line 202). Some people were hinting that the town should discontinue the lottery. But Mr.

Summers acts quite petulantly whenever someone would mention stopping the lottery.

The town just keeps the lottery because it had been around for as long as the village

itself had been. In the editorial “American Flag Stands for Tolerance”the writer is stating his

opinion on flag burning. Everyone seems to discriminate against the people who

participate in flag burning, but our flag represents freedom, and we have the right to

burn the flag. “More than anything else, the flag stands for free expression of ideas, no

matter how distasteful.” (page 20, lines 64-66). “ Thus were we to embrace a
