According to the American Nurses Association, nursing means that the nurse is responsible for a plethora of tasks. These tasks include protection of patients from internal and external factors, promoting health, encouraging independence, maintaining safety, managing pain, and being an advocate. The definition provided by the ANA encompasses all aspects of the patient as a whole, as well as outside factors. In order for the nurse to effectively care for the patient population, he/she has to consider these numerous components.
Professional Mission Statement The knowledge I gained in this Professional Roles and Value course is that nursing has many professional roles. The changes of nursing from earlier history to today show a promise to the advancement and development of different nursing career opportunities in the future. Understanding regulatory agency, professional nursing organization, nursing history, professional nursing figures, theories, and nursing code of ethics, my knowledge has broadened in nursing. The functional differences between a regulatory agency and professional nursing organization made me aware of the benefits and services they offer for nursing.
The Nurse of the Future Nursing Core Competencies include ten areas of expertise: Patient - centered care, professionalism, informatics and technology, evidence - based practice, leadership, systems - based practice, safety, communication, teamwork and collaboration , and quality improvment. After a lot of research, these competencies were selected based on how we can transition from our current practice and education standards to our future practices. The ten competencies that were selected are based on the foundation of nursing education and how it will translate into the practical world. It is very important to understand each aspect of this model because it is the core of how we develop our nursing knowledge while transitioning from student

The nursing profession encompasses not only different levels of licensed nurses but also different scopes and skills. The four main nursing roles include; member of the profession, provider of the patient-centered care, patient safety advocate and member of the health care team (Texas Board of Nursing [TBON], 2011). Additionally, there are 25 core competencies that fall under the four nursing roles that are further explained into more specific expectations in clinical judgements, behaviors and competency (TBON, 2011). The competencies are written to guide nursing school curriculums accordingly and to provide a foundation of education to be carried out in all programs (TBON, 2011).
