During the 1800’s, a war developed among states that had been dealing with conflicts. The North and South were having issues with each other, disagreements to what they believe was right. This led to the Civil War, which its goal was to stop the crisis from continuing between the two regions. The battle over slavery had the North demand on keeping the Union, but also to end slavery. For most wars it brought great impact to our nation, but in a frightening situation. The Civil War lasted from 1861 to 1865. At this time there was a vast change in having equality for the society, especially to the African Americans. North preferred the slaves to be banned, but the South was all in for having slaves to work for them. Also, the South decided to expand slavery because it would help the slave states more than the free states. While slaves had lack of rights, any slaves try to escape to the North for freedom would still be sent back to their owners if were caught according to the Fugitive Slave Act. Similarly, World War II relates to this situation where Jews had to hide from the Nazis or else they would be killed. Another issue with slavery was how the slaves were treated by their owners. For example, the illustration with what Thomas Nast interpreted was to show comparison from the South and the North. The left portion of the image appeared to have slaves whipped and looked down upon their weakness. The right side reveals that in the North blacks had more care and support to provide what they need. (Doc 7) The Northerners sees that having slaves is improper and takes away the white’s privilege for jobs. Additionally, the song “Battle Hymn of the Republic” written by Julia Ward Howe, represents the Union toward anti-slavery and that the slaves worked very worked very hard to fight for their freedom. Lincoln believed that the government working together led to more success than being divided. Furthermore, it could come to terms of having more agreements and building a stronger, better nation.
