Laws were even made based on religion. The churches were so powerful they would even go to war with people of different religions. Peasants were expected to follow the “Great Chain of Being” which meant they were expected to show humble deference to their betters(). The second reason that the modern world highlights the limitations of peasants is they were constantly threatened by scarcity and famine ().
The societies of Tokugawa Japan (c.1603-1867C.E.) and medieval Europe (c.1000-1500C.E.) had two things in common; a feudal system. A feudal system is something that features hierarchies or social structures. The feudal system normally starts with a religion, which is at the very top of the social pyramid, then it’s the King or monarch for Europe and the shogun for Japan, then there are the nobles for Europe and the daimyos for Japan. As we go down the pyramid there are the warriors, like the knight in Europe and the samurai in Japan, then there are the peasants. The peasants were included in both eras and are at the lowest part of the pyramid.
In the beginning, during the darkness and before the world had taken its true form there was two Gods who ruled before time. Tepeu the Maker who had the form of man and Gucumatz the Feathered Spirt who had taken the form of a serpent with bright vibrant wings. Although the void around them was dark, these two gods glistened with bright vibrant colours that stood out above all. These two gods formed an alliance and created the world. Whatever they imagined took the shape of a solid form.
These relationships were called feudalism (Doc. 1). Feudalism and the Church greatly contributed to the social, economic, and political life in Europe in the Middle Ages. “Feudalism was a political, economic, and social system which included kings, nobles, knights, and serfs (Doc. 1).” Every position or status had a job that benefitted another ranking (Doc. 1). For example, a king grants land to nobles, nobles granted land to knights, and knights grant land to serfs (Doc. 1).
Afterwards, the Creating Power brought out all the animals and plants from his pipe bag and used the earth to form humans. The Kings and Queens were at the top, then the nobles, the knights, and last peasants and serfs(Doc. 1). Serfs and peasants had very little land given and they even had to provide food that they farmed for the knights and nobles.
As written in bible, animals were created on the sixth day before humans were created on the seventh day. In the pragmatic examination and observation of scientists, there were dinosaurs long before humans appeared. Bones, habitats ,etc were all realistic evidences for the theory of dinosaurs. The more spiritual aspects something had, the higher up it was, and those with more matter and less spirit were lower on the chain (Melani). At the bottom of the chain were the elements, then came plants, followed by animals, then humans, then angels, and at the top was God (Melani). Within each of these categories there were subcategories (Melani).
