At first, France had three classes, or Estates, of people. The First Estate was made of people who worked for the church. The Second Estate was made of rich people with important government jobs. The Third Estate was made of the middle class (people who were not rich but not poor) and the poor. The Third Estate was very angry with the other two Estates because they had to pay about half of their income (money someone earns) to them in taxes (money for government taken from people’s income, goods, or services). People started thinking new ideas about the government and fighting back. This was called the French Revolution.
