In the online video “Ann Coulter- 'We Only Owe Black People Not Gays, Women or Immigrants Civil Rights” public speaker and author Ann Coulter makes the claim that the only true civil rights movement is that of blacks and all other civil rights movements are not real. According to Coulter, America should not aid struggling immigrants or gay marriages because they don't have the intertwined history with America. This is inaccurate, America has always defined itself as a country of freedom and liberty where, with a little hard work and dedication, you can achieve just as much as those around you. In my own personal life I have seen evidence of this, my father never received a college degree but through friends, multiple failures, and hard work, he is now the Operations Manager at an engineering firm. Although he did not have the advantages and opportunities others had he instead created those opportunities for himself and pushed forward even when life pushed back. Yuhfill tells a story about what life was like growing up in America not being white, she describes america’s effect on people as “America changed them, but they changed America too” (Yuhfill). America is not solely built on its past in consonance with Coulter’s argument but is instead continually built and developed by what happens now. Later in the article Yuhfill explains that “they changed the country, and they all came to call themselves Americans” (Yuhfill). Both statements when connected essentially convey, if you have been affected by America then you are an American.
