Task 1 (B)
When Robin Hooke in 1665 first observed a cell under a basic microscope, he was unsure of the function of these cells. Hooke couldn’t see any indication of any main cellular organelles that we now know to exist within each individual cell. Due to advances in technology and ever evolving research, it is now widely evident that cells are fundamental to life. Each cell has a series of cell organelles and each of these organelles has a structure and function within the cell. Animal cells and plant cells have mutual organelles, although plant cells have organelles that animal cells do not have.
The cell membrane keeps the cell organised and separate from other internal surroundings. Cell membranes protect the cell from other factors within the body, allowing the other organelles within the cell to carry out their functions successfully. The cell membrane is semi-permeable allowing individual molecules to move within it. The cell membrane has a bilayer of phospholipid molecules, this bilayer has integrated proteins to allow transportation of materials in and out of the cell.

The nucleus controls all growth and reproduction within the cell and is seen as the most significant organelle within the cell. This organelle is enclosed within a double membrane, with the exterior membrane connected to endoplasmic reticulum and the interior membrane connected to nuclear pores. This double membrane protects the nucleus from the rest of the cell, ensuring that the DNA contained within the nucleus is fully protected.
Mitochondria is an organelle that helps produce energy for the cell. Like the nucleus, the mitochondria is enclosed within a double membrane. The inner membrane is folded increasing the surface area of the
