` The graphic novel When Stars Are Scattered by Victoria Jamieson and Omar Mohamed, follows the story Omar who is living in a refugee camp called Daddab with his little brother Hassan; Omar and Hassan live with their guardian Fatima. They lost their mother in the civil war and hase to leave their home in Somalia. Omar’s little brother faces many struggles. Omar has to decide if he should finish school or help his brother. In the book, Omar continuously has to make difficult decisions for himself even if he thinks his family needs him. These difficult discussions make Omar build resilience. At the beginning of the book Omar has to make a hard decision by leaving his brother and going to school. Omar is playing in the sand when a guy named Salan suggests that he should go to school. Omar is hesitant at first but then he has a conversation with Fatima and she suggests he should go to school. Omar ends up going but is still nervous about if Hassan will be ok. On his way up to school Omar says, “It was so hard to leave Hassan. I tried to shove my fears deep inside me.” (Jamieson + Mohamed 40) This shows that Omar had trouble deciding if he should go to school or not. Hassan was out and a few kids robbed him. Omar hears the news and it makes him very upset. Omar rushes home and sees that Hassan is hurt. Omar wants to stay with his brother and drop out of school. On the day of the Exam, Omar’s friend Maryam talks to Omar and tells him he should take the exam. Omar thinks and realizes that he should take the exam for himself and his future. Omar ends up going to take the Exam when he says, “Pass or Fail- I’ve done my best.
