When the slave trade started in earnest, why did the Europeans accept it? What made it morally acceptable in their eyes?
When the slave trade started in earnest, the Europeans accepted it because at first the slaves were thought of as novelties, and the Europeans kept them as tokens of wealth or artistic taste (pg. 319). There were some free black people that worked, but the number was few, and the average Europeans had no first-hand contact with them (pg. 319).
