The Truman Doctrine was written by President Harry S. Truman on March 12, 1947. Harry Truman was born on May 8, 1884 in Lamar, Missouri. Harry attended UMKC School of Law until he became a senator of Missouri in 1935. After serving 10 years as a senator he became the 33rd president of the United States, staying in office for two terms. Truman was heavily opposed to communism. The Truman Doctrine came from a speech given by President Harry Truman on March 12, 1947. He wrote it to help gain allies and help counter against the growth of the Soviet Union. World War 2 had just ended and the Soviet Union was controlling countries and threatening them, with the goal of expanding communism across the world. This was Truman's message to the world going into it, however the U.S. offered assistance resulting in helping two main countries, Greece and Turkey. “The very existence of the Greek state is today threatened by the terrorist activities of several thousand armed men, led by Communists, who defy the Government's authority at a number of points, particularly along the northern boundaries.”(Truman pg. 2) This is the result of Great Britain withdrawing from providing aid to Greece. Soon after, they stated that they are also unable to provide assistance for Turkey anymore. “The British Government has informed us that, owing to its own difficulties, it can no longer extend financial or economic aid to Turkey. As in the case of Greece, if Turkey is to have the assistance it needs, the United States must supply it.
