Watch and Listen Parents play a large role in their children's lives when it comes to them needing a figure to rely on. In To Kill a Mockingbird written by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch, a single father raising his two young children, Jem and Scout, has to be a good role model to his kids because they learn from him. Atticus is a defense lawyer in Maycomb, a small town in Alabama. His work causes Atticus to be away from home a lot because he leaves in the early morning and does not come back till late night. Even though he is working long hours and is a single father, he makes it known to his children that they can come and confine themselves to him if they want to talk. At one of Atticus’s trials, Jem and Scout secretly were watching when they were not supposed to be knowing everything about his work. Atticus could have gotten mad at the kids for doing this without him knowing, but instead all he said was “Jem, come down from there,” (Lee 235). Jem and Scout went behind Atticus’s back and went to the trial when they should not have. Atticus knew that yelling at the kids would not have changed anything they have done, so instead of yelling at them he told them to go home with Calpurnia, eat a good dinner.If the verdict was not ready yet, they could come back to hear since they had already listen to the whole trial. He is trying to be a good role model and teach them to be respectful because Jem and Scout will learn by how Atticus acts and what he says. Atticus tries to show good demonstrations of what he says and how he reacts to things because “Kids listen to and watch what their parents do, taking everything in” (Peterson). For instance, if a parent starts to yell, cry, act happy, or show/say any strong emotions, their children will start to notice and pick up on these acts. Parents should act calm in a situation and not lash out so their children do not learn to do the same. Atticus acts calm when he found Scout and Jem in the courtroom.
