Fathers are role models. A good father is one that protects and provides for their children with love. A father also disciplines his children’s, and who brings them up knowing what is right and wrong. Atticus Finch is this.
Atticus Finch is about fifty. He alone brings up two children: Jem and Scout. Their mother died earlier on, in the novel, from an illness. He is all they have. Atticus Finch is also one of few lawyers in Maycomb. Furthermore, he is probably the only just lawyer of Maycomb.

Atticus treats everyone as equals. His choices tell a lot about what kind of person he is. He chooses a negro house keeper, to look after and raise his kids. He just responds: “I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody”. This shows that he is not like the other people in Maycomb and tries to see everyone as equal, even himself.

Atticus Finch doesn’t expect his kids to respect him just because he is their father, but because he acts in a way that deserves respect. This is true with whomever Atticus encounters throughout the novel. This makes people trust him and look to him for guidance. This always links to how he is rational.
For example, when Scout asks Atticus why he’s defending Tom Robinson he says: “For a number of reasons. The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town, I couldn’t represent this country in the legislature, I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again. …” This shows that he expects the people of Maycomb, Jem and Scout to respect him if he’s worthy of respect.
A way of how Jem and Scout respect their father is by calling him Atticus. By this, they imply that he is not only their father or parent but as an individual person. Atticus wants them not to think of him any better than
