Atticus is a good father by teaching valuable lessons to his children such as telling them to not get anything into their heads. One lesson Atticus occasionally tells Scout is to “keep your head up” and do not let nonsense bother you. Atticus tells Scout “You just hold your head high and keep those fists down. No matter what anyone says to you, don’t let ‘em get your goat.” At this time in the book Scout has been hearing a lot of negativity from peers at her school in regards to Atticus defending Tom Robinson in court.
