Peer pressure, a desire to fit in, poor parenting and a plethora of other motives encourage young people to act in ways they might have never thought they could. However, as the symbol of the yin yang displays, there is good in the bad, and some young people defy the unrelenting, undertow coming from the waves of society, and instead take their own route to climb the ladder of greatness. In the novel, The Other Wes Moore, crafted by Wes Moore, both of the main characters are men with the same name, skin color and birth place, only differentiated by the actions they take—all of which are detrimentally influenced by their mothers.

"You forget what you want to remember and remember what you want to forget" (McCarthy). The Road by Cormac McCarthy is an exhilarating novel based in a post-apocalyptic world. Within this piece of literature, there are many figures representing a variety of different elements of the world and human society. Of these characters, there are primarily only two protagonists: the boy and the man. The two protagonists are central figures that in terms of evolution, are near polar opposites; as the man remains neutral throughout the novel, the boy is constantly changing and thus evolving.
It revolves around the flight of the princess to escape the awful marriage to his father (Perrault, 1977). Charles Perrault uses the princess’ character to reveal the major themes of overcoming evil, child abuse and incest in the story. Perrault also brings out the moral that it is better to encounter awful challenges in life than to fail in one’s duty. He shows that although the virtue may seem unrealistic, it can always triumph. The author uses various literary devices to reveal the various morals of the story.
In Chris Cleave’s novel, Little Bee, the cruelty that the protagonist faces not only motivates her, but makes her stronger. Little Bee, a Nigerian girl, manages to escape from the deteriorating conditions of her homeland after a horrific encounter. She seeks refuge in a small town just outside of London, where she reunites with Sarah, a woman who saved Little Bee’s life back in Nigeria. Both women encounter terrible cruelties and this violence that Little Bee and Sarah face allows them to gain strength and overcome their differences.
